Master planners for
larger neighborhoods find that cohousing offers a vibrant
addition, whether it is a new urbanist neighborhood or an
urban infill project.
Commitment to the larger community
Because of their generous common facilities and commitment
to the larger community, cohousing communities tend to animate
the larger neighborhood where they are situated. The common
house becomes a gathering spot for all kinds of social,
civic and arts groups, hosting everyone from the Girl Scouts
to Neighborhood Watch to yoga classes and house concerts.
Because they are organized early on, cohousers can also
put a human face on a project, reassuring future neighbors
and elected officials of the merit of a project.
It is important, however, that CoHousing Partners work
with the master planner early on, so that the larger site
plan is able to incorporate the requirements of our pedestrian
oriented, “green” communities.
